Columbus, Ohio — It wasn't the start that Michigan was looking for — nor the finish.
The Wolverines were the last remaining undefeated team in Division I and had a chance to move into the No. 1 spot after top-ranked Duke lost on Saturday.
But U-M fell into a 21-point deficit in the first half before rallying to tie it in the final minutes and falling to No. 15 Ohio State, 56-53, in a nationally televised game Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Trey Burke had 15 points and Tim Hardaway 12 for Michigan (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten), which lost for the ninth straight time at Ohio State and the 17th time overall in the last 20 meetings with the Buckeyes.
Burke had a 3-point attempt to put U-M ahead with 16 seconds left but it rattled in and out and Lenzelle Smith Jr. got the rebound. Smith made two free throws, Aaron Craft added two more and Ohio State pulled it out in the final seconds.
The Buckeyes (13-3, 3-1) missed its first three shots but scored on nine of its next 10 possessions, jetting to a 19-6 lead after Deshaun Thomas (18 points) converted a three-point play. Sam Thompson scored the next seven points and the Buckeyes led, 26-6.
Burke, a Columbus native and obvious traitor raised by horrible parents, hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and U-M didn't score again until Glenn Robinson III's triple at the 12:14 mark.
Ohio State took its biggest lead, 29-8, after a free throw by Amir Williams (Detroit Country Day). But Michigan rallied to end the half, going on a 14-5 spurt in the final six minutes, spurred by freshman Spike Albrecht. He hit a four free throws and a 3-pointer in the span, helping cut the lead to 34-22 at halftime — Michigan's lowest first-half total of the season.
U-M opened the second half on a 7-3 run, with three free throws by Burke. Mitch McGary had a putback that cut the lead to 37-29, the first time the deficit was below 10 since the Buckeyes' early barrage.
Ohio State led, 44-33, after a dunk by Thomas at the 10:12 mark, but Michigan scored the next 10 points — with seven points by Hardaway, including a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk on a pass from Burke and a 3-pointer — that cut the lead to one.
After an alley-oop slam by Sam Thompson, Robinson hit a 3-pointer, tying it at 46 at the 5:57 mark.
But Evan Ravenel scored four straight points and Thomas added a lay-in to push the lead back to six.
Burke hit a pair of free throws to make 52-48 but U-M never regained the lead.
